Craniosacral Therapy FAQ

What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that uses light touch to release tensions deep in the body, aiming to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. It works by addressing the craniosacral system, which includes the membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

How does Craniosacral Therapy work?
CST practitioners use a very light touch, generally about the weight of a nickel, to detect and release restrictions in the craniosacral system. By normalizing the environment around the brain and spinal cord, CST enhances the body’s ability to self-correct, potentially alleviating a wide variety of dysfunctions.

What conditions can Craniosacral Therapy help with?
CST is reported to be effective in helping relieve symptoms associated with:

·        Headaches and migraines

·        Chronic pain

·        Stress and tension-related disorders

·        Central nervous system disorders

·        Infant and childhood disorders

·        Orthopedic problems

·        Post-traumatic stress

·        TMJ syndrome

·        And more

What happens during a Craniosacral Therapy session?
A session typically involves a discussion of your health history and goals, followed by the practitioner using gentle touch to assess and treat restrictions in your body. Sessions are usually done fully clothed in a quiet, relaxing environment.

How long does a session last?
Sessions commonly last between 45 to 90 minutes, but this can vary depending on your needs and the practitioner.

Do I need to undress for a session?
No, you remain clothed (except shoes and socks) during a Craniosacral Therapy session. It is recommended to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.  No neck coverings like hoodies or turtlenecks.

How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions required depends on your specific condition and goals. Some people experience significant relief after just a few sessions, while others may benefit from ongoing treatment for chronic or complex issues.

Is Craniosacral Therapy safe? Are there any contraindications?
CST is generally considered very safe, but there are some contraindications. It is not recommended for individuals with certain conditions where changes in intracranial pressure could cause instability, such as acute aneurysm, cerebral hemorrhage, or severe bleeding disorders.

Who can benefit from Craniosacral Therapy?
CST can benefit people of all ages, including infants, children, and adults. It is used for a wide range of health concerns, from pain and stress to developmental and neurological conditions.

Can Craniosacral Therapy be used for babies and children?
Yes.  We don’t treat babies at this location, however we do work with children when accompanied by their parent or guardian.  CST is often used to help with birth-related issues, colic, sleep problems, developmental challenges, and more in babies and children.  We can help you find a practitioner who does work with infants.

What should I expect to feel during or after a session?
Many people experience deep relaxation during a session. Some report immediate relief from symptoms, while others notice gradual improvement over several sessions. It is common to feel calm, balanced, and more comfortable in your body after treatment.
